Hawaii

So you want to go on a vacation and get away from it all?
Oh yea.  And everyone has a great tip for you to their perfect spot.
Well, I am among a large group who think Hawaii is the place to be.
I have been hearing all about Hawaii for several years from two
people who grew up on Oahu and have returned frequently.
I thought, Oh yea, many people have great memories of their
childhood and that makes the place where they grew up the best
place in the world.  And that is right for THEM.  I hope that everyone
has pleasant memories about their surroundings as they grew up.
Well after taking the plunge and spending a week in Hawaii, I can
verify that this is one of the best places in the world to vacation.
When I made reservations to stay in Honolulu for several days I
was given some questioning glances that indicated that I could do
much better.  But I wanted to see the Pearle Harbor Memorial and
some of the area that was made so well known by its place in our
national history.
Well, lets cut to the chase.  Honolulu is a big city and with it comes
the traffic and congestion of any large city.  That can diminish some of
the glamour of being on an Island.  But if your hotel was on the beach
as was ours, you don't need to look at anything but shoreline and waves.
Travel in the winter in Hawaii brings with it the usual rainy season.  And
we really got rain.  It put a damper on some of the experience.  It cancelled
our first trip to the Arizona Memorial.  The wind was too much for the
boats that take you to the memorial.
We took a tour of the Polynesian Cultural Center on the north side of the island
of Oahu.  It was very informative and entertaining to see natives from each of
the cultures that make up the Polynesian Triangle.  The Luau was good and I
marvel that anyone can serve 1,000 people with good hot food in about an hour.
The evening show is 2  hours long and is quite spectacular and colorful.
Luckily I came to my senses and at the urging of my two experienced Hawaiian
friends made reservations on Lauai for two nights.
It is just the opposite of Oahu in that the airport is small and easy to navigate.
The villages are small and personable.  The traffic is less and the scenery is
just gorgeous- everywhere you look.
We had rain here as well, but did have some nice sunshine with which to view
some of the many waterfalls on the island.
Now that I have a little experience I know where I will head to next.  Maui.
These other islands are what we go to Hawaii to see and getting out of Honolulu
is a must if you want to really see the beautiful Hawaii.
